Review: Wood Street Coffee, Walthamstow, east London

It seems we can't stay away from Walthamstow so here is another little brunching place to add to your list. I'd been hearing a lot about Wood Street Coffee on the grapevine aka read it in Time Out. My bible on a Tuesday. Now I'm not a coffee drinker but I am a massive brunch eater. My boyfriend is a big coffee drinker and a massive brunch eater. So it seemed a no brainer that we gave it a shot while we were in the area. Tucked out of the way in Blackhorse Workshop, it's a bit of mission to find but don't let that put you off.

Choosing to make the most of the sunshine we decided to grab a table outside. We arrived just after 9.30am and it was pretty busy already which could only mean good things in my eyes. I eagerly ordered the smashed avocado on sourdough bread with chilli flakes and a fried egg on top. Served alongside fresh peppery rocket and a wedge of lemon, this was delicious. Avocado on toast is such a simple yet tasty dish. The oozing bright orange yolk was perfectly cooked and provided a brilliant accompaniment to the earthy avocado.

But when my boyfriends dish of homemade cumin, paprika and coriander baked beans on toasted sourdough bread with extra chorizo and a fried egg, I was suddenly green with envy. Obviously I had to try a bite for research purposes and they were as good as they looked. The huge chunks of chorizo and paprika added a gorgeous kick to the dish. The creamy butterbeans were delicious in the sweet tomato sauce. It's not often I regret my food option but I did this time.

Wood Street Coffee is a lovely little place to go for a leisurely breakfast. The service was quick, the outdoor area was a lovely touch and prices were very reasonable for the sized portion. We left feeling satisfied with doesn't always happen with these greedy monkeys! It seems we had stumbled upon another Walthamstow gem.

3 places in London to go for a quick lunch

Sometimes when you're dashing around London trying to fit in anything and everything, you don't always want somewhere to have a leisurely lunch. Places to see people! But that chicken ceasar baguette from Pret can only be eaten so many times. So here are three quick, cool and tasty independent eateries that are perfect to fill your belly before you soak up even more sights and run those errands.

1. Banh Mi Bay
Vietnamese is one of my favourite cuisines. It's a fairly new one to me but I love how fresh, flavoursome and interesting it is. Hannah introduced me to Banh Mi Bay which specialises in the Banh Mi Baguettes. You can choose from a traditional roll or a french baguette before picking your filling - warm or cold. I opted for the warm spiced pork - what a good shout that was! For just a fiver, the Vietnamese roll comes bursting at the seams with pork, oodles of pickled shredded carrots, fresh cucumber and fiery chilli. Keep in mind it's not for the lighthearted! It's a great choice to a takeaway and they have three outposts dotted around central London.

2. Sampa
I stumbled into this Brazilian coffee shop by chance when I decided to shelter from the rain in Leather lane. Offering a delectable choice of sweet treats from slabs of red velvet cake to fruit custard tart to gooey chocolate brownies, it's the perfect place to get a sugar rush. I loved the industrial vibe with green succulents, rough wooden tables and mix-matched collages on the wall. It has the cool East London hipster vibe down to a tee - in central London. I spent a good few hours stuffing my face with cake with I blogged and didn't feel rushed at all by the staff.

3. Peyton and Byrne
I touched on this in a post last week but I couldn't leave it out! Again it offers fantastic sweet treats, healthy salads, decedent hot chocolates and scrumptious sandwiches. There really is something for everyone in this joint. Thanks to its central location in Covent Garden, it's in the middle of all the action. I personally recommend the roasted vegetable, pesto and mozzarella ciabatta. Perfection!

Do you have any suggestions for a quick bite to eat?

Costa Christmas

A little while ago I was very kindly invited to preview the new Costa menu before it went on sale to the general public. Lucky me eh? I'm going to hold my hands up here and admit that i'm not a regular hot drink drinker and coffee isn't really my thing. But I loved the Orange Hot Chocolate. It was perfectly decedent and had a lovely aftertaste. The White Hot Chocolate was a treat! I couldn't manage the whole drink as it was very rich but richness is what you want at Christmas right? If you can't go all out during the festive season, then when can you?

The Hot Spiced Apple tasted just like cider but without the alcohol. The cinnamon stick was a great touch and really added to the flavour. The treats? Oh my, they were delicious! If I had to pick, my favourites was the giant mince pie - which i've had twice since - and the childhood favourite cornflake cake with a festive holly leaf.

We were also kindly given a voucher to try their festive sandwiches range and I made a beeline for the Cheese Board Panini. It makes me sad that it's only limited edition as I could eat it every day for lunch! I'm already planning my third one in the space of a few weeks. It's perfect for any cheese lover and the tangy cranberry sauce helps to enhance it rather than overwhelm it!

The Brie, Bacon and Cranberry Panini is next on my list. Sounds yummy eh?

Have you tried their Christmas menu yet?
