Review: Patty and Bun

Another day, another burger. London shows no signs of giving up the burger trend any time soon. Determined to carb load before watching the London Marathon, we opted to visit one of the originals Patty and Bun. This is my third time to the burger joint and each time is just as good as the last. The Liverpool Street branch is small but cosy and service is uber quick. You don't have to wait long to stuff your face! It's situated just outside the station next to Macdonalds - this is a much better shout if you're in need of a foodie fix. Simply walk up to the counter, give your name and take a seat.

We both opted for the delicious Smokey Robinson. A toasted brioche bun is stuffed with a juicy medium-rare beef patty, gooey cheese, tomato, lettuce, oodles of sweet caramelised onions, crispy bacon, ketchup and a tasty special smoked sauce. It's a beast that requires two hands to bite into. It's also a beast that requires lots of napkins to wipe up the mess it makes! The bun held all the glorious juices and the bacon was the perfect accompaniment to the smokey sauce. The rosemary skin-on chips were extremely moreish and were a good mixture of crispy and soft chips.

It makes my top three burgers in London - no mean feat!

Review: Boom Burger

After reading about Boom Burger on The Londoner, it had been on my radar for a long time. But I very rarely venture West - East London is my ends. Maybe North if I'm feeling adventurous. I was staying overnight in Lancaster Gate, London last week and thought we might as well try it out. How right we were to take the plunge.

The restaurant is teeny tiny but what it lacks in size it certainly makes up for with delicious food. We plonked ourselves at the bar with Michael Jackson ringing in our ears and scoured the menu. I already knew I had to try the jerk chicken burger before I'd ever glanced down. I LOVE jerk chicken, I could eat it all day long. The Jerk Boom consisted of shredded spicy chicken on top of fried plantain with a handful of rocket - a delicious mango and pawpaw sauce is smothered on the bun. It was messy and dirty and exactly how it should have been. The fried plantain added the perfect amount of crunch and the shredded chicken was soft and tender. The incredible moreish saltfish fritters mixed with chilli and herbs were divine. They easily outshone the fries and packed a decent amount of heat. That rum punch? I was guzzling it like water.

One thing's for sure - I'll definitely be trekking west so I can sample it again. I've got the whole menu to work through!

I'll have what Jack's having

Last weekend I was I was tweeted by TGI Fridays asking if I wanted to be let into a secret. Being extremely nosy I eagerly traded secrets and was excited to find out they had a secret burger launching. You have to be in it to know it!

After kindly being sent some vouchers, the boyfriend and I stopped by one night after work to try it out for ourselves. When the waitress came to take your order you simply had to say "I'll have  what Jack's having". Despite feeling a little bit silly and worried she would wonder what the hell we were on about, it worked a treat. We sat back and scoffed some delicious Jack Daniels Sesame Chicken Strips and debating on what we thought the burger would be.

We were finally put out of our misery and when it arrived it was absolutely huge! The starter suddenly felt like a bad idea. It was topped with what we assumed were caramelised onions coated in a tasty sweet Jack Daniel's sauce. I often try to avoid ordering a burger in a chain restaurant - #burgersnob - because they are so thin. But this one was a beast! It had a great thickness and tasted very meaty. It was a little bit too well done for my liking but that's just personal preference, no fault of the restaurant! The melted cheese went amazingly well with the onions. Well I think it was melted cheese!

I had to cut it in half before I could attempt to eat it. As with all good burger the brioche bun held up until about half way through then it became a sloppy and squidgy mess. But this made it taste even better as all the yummy juices had seeped into the bread. In my humble opinion a brioche bun is the only suitable partner to a juicy burger out there!

The secret burger got a massive thumbs up from the both of us and it really is worth a pun if you find yourself in one of their restaurants. Thanks TGI's for a great mid week meal!

Review: Five Guys

If you've been reading my blog for a while you'll probably have already have came to the conclusion that burgers are my favourite thing to shove in my mouth. It's taken me a while to get round to trying out Five Guys - Obama's fave dontcha know! - so when it was decided we needed an office lunch outing, this burger chain was my suggestion. We didn't queue as we had an early lunch but by the time we'd finished it was starting to get very busy. Make sure you visit off peak!

I opted for the cheese burger with the toppings of tomato, onions and ketchup and a side of small cajun fries. A word of warning - the portion size of the fries is humongous. That brown bag at the back was nearly full up. My boyfriend, who has been known on more than one occasion to finish a whole KFC bargain 12 piece bucket on his own, couldn't even finish a portion when he went. He's an human dustbin so you know the portion size is kinda out of control if he doesn't finish it. One of the unique selling points of Five Guys is the sheer amount of fizzy drink combinations on offer. There's over a 100 to choose from. I was boring and just opted for diet coke but you can go wild!

After being disappointed with the offerings at Shake Shack , I was hoping and praying Five guys didn't leave me with the same sinking feeling. Fear not friends, Five Guys was amazing. The fries were delicious, slightly a bit too spicy after you've shoved a few too many in your mouth but a perfect amount of kick. The cajun seasoning meant they were morish enough to munch without a sauce. The burger was ridiculously messy to eat and was all over the place. It's near on impossible to eat like a lady. The generous layer of plastic cheese - my guilty pleasure in a burger! - helped to add to the flavour. The bun held together quite nicely without breaking too much. It did go soggy after a while but it's what i'd expect for a fast food burger. The burger tasted of much nicer quailty than other fast food chains i've tried - you felt like you were eating meat unlike a certain chain beginning with M. The most important thing was it made me go 'mmmmmm so good' with my mouth full. That's the main thing right?! Five Guys, you win this American fast food battle for me!

Have you tried Five Guys?
